The gap between what the United States imports and what it exports widened in June, the government reported on Wednesday. But economists saw some good news in the larger deficit, which had narrowed in recent months as the volume of trade between the United States and the rest of the world dwindled. The value of imports rose for the first time in nearly a year in June, and American exports increased from a month earlier, though not as much as imports. The $3.5 billion increase in imports primarily reflected rising costs of crude oil, fuel oils and other petroleum-based goods, but businesses and consumers in the United States were also buying more food and beverages from abroad, and demand for foreign-made cars rose. Overall, the trade deficit widened to $27 billion in June from $26 billion in May. The United States imported a total of $152.8 billion in goods and services, and sent $125.8 billion to the rest of the world. Economists had expected the trade gap to widen to $28.5 billion for the month. The figures suggested the worst was over for the global economy, economists said, and that demand for American-made goods was picking up. The United States sent more capital goods like civilian aircraft, semiconductors and industrial machines to other countries, and also exported more industrial supplies.

Personal bankruptcies show no sign of abating after rising more than a third this year and may hit 1.4 million by Dec. 31 as jobs are lost and loans are harder to get, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. More than 126,000 consumers filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. last month, 34% more than in July 2008, the ABI said in its latest report. The increase came after a 36.5% rise in personal bankruptcies in the first six months, to 675,351, according to the ABI research group, which interprets data collected by the National Bankruptcy Research Center. Debt problems don’t stop with subprime borrowers. Celebrities who filed for bankruptcy in July included movie actor Stephen Baldwin, who sought protection from creditors after lenders began foreclosure procedures against his home. JPMorgan’s credit cards lost $672 million, compared with income of $250 million in the second quarter last year. Home- equity charge-offs climbed to $1.3 billion, or 4.6%. Prime mortgage defaults rose to $481 million, or 3.1%, from $104 million, or 1.1% a year earlier. Congress, in October 2005, enacted the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act, a legislative reform package intended to make it harder for consumers to get court orders wiping out their uncollateralized debt. The act required debt counseling and a means test for would-be filers.
